By converting public trip-level data to station-level net arrivals and departures in 15-minute increments, we can see what areas of the city people are leaving and arriving in at different times of the day. Residential neighborhoods like the Lower East Side see net outflows in the morning, while business districts like Midtown see inflows. This trend then reverses in the afternoon and evening.
Each point is a Citibike station, with color representing net inflows (green) or outflows (purple), and size representing the net number of trips in/out of that station in the past 90 minutes. A timeline filter with a 15-minute window shows changes throughout the day. A polygon filter allows users to filter for trips in specific neighborhoods.
